Today, we will be looking at the incredible enigmas surrounding the Temples of Jupiter and Bacchus at Baalbek, Lebanon, one of the most extraordinary ancient sites in the world. Although Baalbek is commonly attributed to the Romans, as you will soon see, the site is exceptional even by Roman standards. The most famous mystery at Baalbek is the Trilithon: three enormous stones embedded into the northern end of a U-shaped megalithic wall surrounding the Temple of Jupiter. Each stone is approximately 64 feet long, 14 feet high, and 12 feet wide. These blocks were laid with astonishing precision, so tightly fitted together that it is often said even a needle could not fit between them. Yet each stone weighs in excess of 800 tons. These are not merely large building blocks. They are among the heaviest stones ever used in construction anywhere on Earth. So, who put them there? How did they do it? And what purpose did they serve? We get little help from the Romans, the site’s alleged builders. They left no known written record explaining how the Trilithon was moved, lifted, or placed. Nor did they clearly explain why such massive stones were necessary in the first place. The most common theory is that the Romans emplaced these stones as part of a massive podium for the Temple of Jupiter. According to this interpretation, the U-shaped wall was intended to form part of a grand supporting platform, perhaps one that was never fully completed. But this explanation raises more questions than it answers. The construction appears to incorporate the remains of an even earlier podium, suggesting the Romans may have built upon something that already existed. And this is where the mystery deepens. The Romans were meticulous record keepers. They documented many of their great engineering achievements, especially when those achievements demonstrated imperial power, skill, and glory. Yet with the Trilithon, there is silence. Some researchers doubt that the Romans had the technology to move and position these massive blocks at all. The Romans loved to boast of their accomplishments. Surely, if they had moved stones of this magnitude, they would have left some description of the event somewhere. Each of the Trilithon blocks weighs roughly 1.6 million pounds and sits more than 20 feet above the ground. For reference, an Airbus A380, currently the world’s largest passenger jet, has a maximum takeoff weight of around 1.1 million pounds. That means each of these ancient stones weighs far more than the largest passenger aircraft on the planet. Another glaring anomaly at the site is found in the nearby quarry, where some of the largest stone blocks ever quarried anywhere on Earth remain in place. The most famous of these is known as the Stone of the Pregnant Woman. It weighs an astonishing 1,000 tons, roughly the weight of 450 cars. Even more shocking, another larger stone was discovered beneath or near it more recently, weighing an estimated 1,200 tons. That is roughly equivalent to the weight of three Boeing 747s. Someone clearly intended to use these stones. And if they intended to use them, then they also intended to move and lift them. But who could have done this? We know some of the heaviest objects the Romans ever lifted, and they are a far cry from 1,000 tons. The 53-ton Column of Trajan was among the heaviest objects lifted in the ancient Roman world. The Romans documented its lifting in detail and used an elaborate crane system known as a lifting tower. Yet no such writings can be found regarding the Trilithon or the enormous unfinished monoliths at Baalbek. A useful comparison can be found in the erection of the Vatican obelisk in 1586. That obelisk weighs approximately 330 tons and was raised by means of a massive lifting tower system. A similar method was likely used for the construction of Trajan’s Column. But even the Vatican obelisk, as impressive as it is, weighs far less than the stones at Baalbek. The Temple of Bacchus is no less impressive. Measuring eight columns wide and fifteen columns deep, it is one of the largest temples of antiquity. Yet even this monumental structure is dwarfed by the Temple of Jupiter beside it. The surviving unfluted Corinthian columns of the Temple of Jupiter stand over 66 feet tall, weigh roughly 60 tons each, and are raised around 20 feet above the ground. This is a staggering feat of engineering, even by modern standards. It is known that the Romans built on top of earlier structures at Baalbek. Could that same, still-unidentified earlier culture have been responsible for more of the megalithic work now credited to Rome? This question should not be dismissed lightly. Massive ancient structures found in Egypt, South America, Asia, and elsewhere show levels of engineering capability that rival, and in some cases surpass, the greatest architectural achievements of Rome. New discoveries from prehistory are being unearthed all over the world, forcing us to reconsider much of what we thought we knew about the ancient world. Gradually, we are beginning to flesh out the mysteries of our past in greater detail. To many, it is becoming increasingly clear that mankind has forgotten an incredible chapter of its own history. I believe more serious study of sites like Baalbek will help shed light on that mysterious past. Whatever the full truth may be, the stones of Baalbek remain among the most extraordinary enigmas left to us by the ancient world.
